Together makes better health outcomes
Our Vision for Community Wellness
I moved into our rural community over two years ago and I didn’t know anyone except my partner who had been here since time began.
People were welcoming, but it was harder for me with trampas to get involved. I knew the area had a long history of social gatherings but other time and recently with covid, people were doing their own thing. I saw new people lifestyles popping up and knew people were feeling the effects of loniness.
So I decided to create something for myself and I’m much more motivated to do it if I know it would benefit other people that needed it. I found myself a Karlene, a good cheerleader, a doer and has a good sense of humour, and we created out first event especially for new people in the area. We didn’t have huge turnout, but we had the right people turn up that needed it.
Next we decided to do cuppa group for anyone that wanted the company, after a few real conversations, true connection and trust happened. We started to come up with new ideas and it grew from there.
– Sue turned up the very first event, and she commented to me the other day “I didn’t know anyone when I moved here and if we hadn’t gone to those first events, I would have been very lonely and would have moved out of the area”. Sue came up with the idea of the community shop, and made a massive effort in bringing it to life.
Creating Our Community Shop
Step 1
Step 1: Find yourself a wing man/women. Something that shares your vision and is supportive. A person that is fun to create with.
Step 2
Step 2: Generate ideas that inspire both of you. Think about the real needs that unite people. For us, it was tackling feelings of isolation and loneliness. Whatever direction you choose, ensure it’s fun, as you will face challenges along the way and cannot solely depend on motivation to keep you progressing. Don’t design it hard.
Step 3
Step 3: After you have completed an event or idea, you might find it to be a challenging journey. It often takes time for people to engage and get involved. However, as time goes on, you’ll notice that more individuals are drawn to participate. Each person brings their own unique strengths and perspectives. Allow them to participate in their own special way.
Step 4
Step 5
Step 5: Don’t know how to make things happen? make one small step which will lead onto another. All those steps will take you somewhere.
And at some point you will have other people offering to help as well.
